Malays not as stupid as Najib thinks: Mahathir

  • "Najib believes the Malays will continue to support him, but the Malays are not as stupid as he thinks."

PETALING JAYA, Aug 3 (MySinchew) -- Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today urged the government to explain why 1MDB was unable to pay back the US$600 million (approximately RM2.68 billion) debt to Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).

In his blog titled 1MDB's Debt, Mahathir pointed out that since 1MDB had been taken over by the government, its debts were equivalent to government debts.

"When we owe people, we must have a plan to pay back the debt. The owed money is not for extravagant expenses," he wrote.

Mahathir was curious why the government was unable to pay the debt.

"If not because of investment losses or purchase of assets that cannot be sold, where has the money gone?" he asked.

"Najib believes the Malays will continue to support him, but the Malays are not as stupid as he thinks.

"They know that their money is gone, and the debt will be passed down to their children."
