KUALA LUMPUR (Sin Chew Daily) -- Young people today are pampered with endless of conveniences that they have no idea how our ancestors built their dwellings out of nothing.

The 10-acre Eco Village by Green Life Project used to be a fruit orchard deep in the forests in Batang Kali bordering Ulu Selangor forest reserve.

Green Life Project started to build the village last June, using the most basic primitive tools and their own hands.

"The first thing was to put four bamboo stakes to shelter ourselves, and the next step was to look for water source.

"Under the guidance of our Thai teacher we diverted the water from across the hill to the village. With the water we could then build a more proper house," Green Life Project founder Sharley Chung said.

Natural materials

But things weren't that smooth in real life, as they could not find water during the first two months but were insistent on not using water pipes unfriendly to the environment.

So they had to go down the hill to bring in the water initially, until they managed to find water source about a kilometer away with the help of the Thai teacher.

Every built structure in Eco Village has been constructed with the most natural materials readily available in the forest.

"We built the Eco Village, our home, using the most primitive methods. We want the children in civilized world to experience how their forefathers built their dwellings long, long ago," Chung said.

"We want them to experience life without all the conveniences, and learn to solve their problems out of the nature in establishing a life.

"We believe that everyday life here provides the best opportunities for the kids to learn."
