Pujut state by-election July 4

PUTRAJAYA, May 19 (Bernama) -- The by-election for the state seat of Pujut in Sarawak will be held on July 4, said Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

He said the EC, at a special meeting today, decided that nomination for the by-election would be on June 20.

It also decided that there would be no early voting, he said at a press conference after the EC meeting.

Mohd Hashim said the 2016 electoral rolls updated as of May 11 would be used for the by-election.

"The rolls contains the names of 20,078 electors, comprising 20,070 ordinary electors and eight absentee electors who are abroad," he said.

The Pujut by-election is being held following the disqualification of incumbent assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon of the DAP on May 12.

The Sarawak Legislative Assembly cited his alleged Australian citizenship for the disqualification. The motion seeking his disqualification received 70 votes in favour and 10 votes against in the 82-seat assembly.

Asked about the DAP intention to challenge the disqualification in a court of law, Mohd Hashim said the EC would abide by any court decision.

However, the EC would have to hold the by-election as it was notified of the vacant seat by Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar on May 16, he said, adding that a by-election must be held within 60 days of a seat falling vacant.

On the upcoming by-election, he said five schools would be used as polling centres with 44 polling streams.

A total of 483 election workers would be appointed to conduct the by-election, estimated to cost RM838,536, he said.

Mohd Hashim said the acting secretary of the Miri City Council, Morshidi Fredrick, would be the returning officer for the by-election.

The electoral rolls for the by-election would begin to be sole on June 15 to enable the electors to check their names, he said.

In the 11th Sarawak state election held last year, Dr Ting won the seat with a majority of 1,759 votes, beating Datuk Hii King Chiong of the Barisan Nasional, Jofri Jaraiee of PAS and independent candidate Fong Pau Teck.
