Debate cannot proceed without permit: police

  • Perak acting police chief says the police have not received any written application from any party for the proposed Mahathir-Nazri debate.

IPOH, Mar 17 (MySinchew) -- Perak acting police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the police had yet to receive any written application from any party for the proposed debate between former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and tourism and culture minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

He said in a statement that if the debate were to proceed without a permit from the police, it would be deemed an illegal gathering in violation of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and the police could take actions against participants to safeguard the peace and safety of local residents.

Hasnan warned the public against taking part in any illegal gathering.

The debate is supposed to be held at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Kuala Kangsar at 3.00 p.m. March 25 (Saturday) over the 1MDB issue.
